According to icare’s “Take out a policy” guidance, the application process takes about 10–15 minutes once the required information is available (figures checked 1 October 2026). NSW Workers Compensation cover starts only at the time and date the policy is issued, and an issued policy cannot be backdated.
Do I need a policy for my NSW business?
If you have employees in NSW, you will probably need a Workers Compensation policy. However, not every employer needs this insurance, so first check whether it applies to your business.
The application process also applies when you are reinstating a cancelled Workers Compensation policy.
What information should I have ready?
Have the following available before applying:
| Information | Details to have ready |
|---|---|
| Business | Legal name, ABN, postal and operating addresses, and contact details |
| Policy timing | The start date for the policy |
| Business type | Your main business activity |
| Workers | The number of workers in your business |
| Wages | An estimate of wages paid to workers |
| Previous cover | Details of past Workers Compensation insurance |
| Refunds | Bank details so refunds can be returned quickly and securely |
The 10–15-minute processing estimate applies once this information is available. Entering a start date during the application does not, by itself, determine when cover begins.
Does finishing the application mean cover has started?
Not necessarily. According to icare, coverage of the business and its people starts from the time and date the policy is issued. The issue time and date appear on the policy’s certificate of currency.
That is the key distinction between completing the application and having cover in force. The application estimate should not be read as confirmation that cover began before the policy was issued.
Can the cover be backdated?
No. Once issued, a policy cannot be backdated. Choosing or entering an earlier start date during the application does not allow an issued policy to be changed retrospectively.
If the start date is important to your decision, check the regulator’s current guidance and the relevant policy PDS before relying on it.
Can I continue a saved quote or get help?
If you completed a quote within the last 30 days, icare says you can retrieve the saved quote and continue the application without starting again.
If you previously held a Workers Compensation policy, icare lists 13 44 22 for assistance. Help is also available through webchat or by calling the same number.
This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Check the regulator page and your policy’s PDS for current requirements and contract terms.
